City plans show other proposed sidewalk projects for Silver Beach and Alabama Hill

Silver Beach residents are concerned about the lack of sidewalks on a street in their neighborhood. The city has classified this issue as low-priority and listed it as a long-term sidewalk project. There are, however, other sidewalk projects in both Silver Beach and Alabama Hill that are garnering more attention from the city.

The pedestrian master plan project list classifies the following proposed sidewalk projects in Alabama Hill and Silver Beach as high- or medium-priority:

  • A 1,910-foot sidewalk on Yew Street from Texas to Woburn streets, with an estimated cost of $1,193,750.
  • A 382-foot sidewalk on Yew Street from Texas to Alabama streets, with an estimated cost of $238,750.
  • A 1,307-foot sidewalk on Yew Street from Maryland to Alabama streets, with an estimated cost of $816,875.
  • An 830-foot sidewalk on Undine Street from Alabama to Texas streets, with an estimated cost of $518,750.
  • A 1,637-foot sidewalk on Electric Avenue from Fraser Street to Lakeway Drive, with an estimated cost of $1,023,120.

According to the city’s pedestrian master plan appendices document, 29 percent of the streets in Silver Beach have sidewalks. When compared to the rest of the city, Silver Beach places 19 out of the city’s 25 neighborhoods in terms of sidewalk coverage, with only Birchwood, Irongate, Samish, South and Edgemoor fairing worse.

Alabama Hill is better off in this category, with 48 percent of streets in the neighborhood attached to sidewalks. Still, nearby neighborhoods have a greater percentage of sidewalks on their streets, with Barkley at 66 percent sidewalk coverage.

The city has also surveyed residents of each neighborhood about their impressions and concerns as pedestrians. The survey data for Silver Beach and Alabama Hill are available through the pedestrian master plan community survey summery.
